Weekly sessions include breathing exercises, meditation, and poses that stretch and flex various muscle groups. There is no sense of competition or ranking. Size and fitness levels do not matter because the leader guides the group in how to make modifications for every yoga action to meet each participant’s unique needs. It’s all about feeling good inside yourself, loving yourself, striving to care for yourself.
To me, yoga is a tool to improve my overall health and sense of wellbeing. The physical exercises reduce stress, strengthen muscles and tone, increase flexibility, improve breathing, increase energy and cardio and circulatory health.
But the practice doesn’t stop there. The mental benefits I feel are equally evident, in developing coping skills and reaching a more positive outlook on life. Class participation creates mental clarity and calmness; increases body awareness; relieves chronic stress; relaxes the mind; centers attention; and sharpens concentration.
Perhaps best of all, is the sense of social connectedness we all develop through participation in the classes, and, after the class, when we take the time to sit together and chat. The sense of camaraderie and shared support is palpable. We listen to each other attentively while we drink our chai tea and snack on healthful foods.
